If the toolstring is stuck and the wireline pulling tension exceeds a preset value, the jar initiates a tensile strike to the stuck toolstring. Additional strikes can be applied to free the toolstring if the initial strike is insufficient. Each activation produces a strike force several times greater than the maximum achievable wireline overpull.
