There are a number of wireless standards that are used for home automation and Z-Wave is one such technology. Z-Wave is a wireless and RF based communication technology developed specifically for residential applications and very light commercial applications. It is one of the most widely used wireless standard and according to the Z-Wave Alliance, there are over 1300 certified devices on the market with 50 million units sold that offer compatibility with Z-Wave. The Z-Wave Alliance was formed in 2005, and is comprised of a group of home control product manufacturers. Z-Wave is viewed as a key enabler for the concept of Internet-of-Things. Reliability, affordability and ease of use are some of the key benefits of Z-Wave. This technology has been designed specifically for applications such as monitoring, control and reading of status. The ITU-T Recommendation G.9959 has defined the PHY and MAC layers for Z-Wave and it supports data rates up to 100 Kbps.
In terms of range, Z-Wave operates in the sub 1 GHz band and this is superior to the competing ZigBee technology in terms of range. However, the use of sub-1 GHz range necessitates the use of a larger antenna and this poses to be a problem as today’s devices and appliances are heading towards miniaturization. Another major issue for Z-Wave is interoperability. Given the fact that Z-Wave is not an open protocol and requires licensing and runs specifically on silicon receivers, there is a limited set of appliances or devices that such architecture can support.
